Getting the Clawfoot Tub Into Victorian By The Bay

Victorian By The Bay Getting A Tub Upstairs

My goodness I haven’t posted in awhile.

I think I have gotten too caught up with Instagram & Facebook

That easy instant gratification where the pictures do most of the talking

But, I started this blog to document and keep track of all the progress

A time capsule of The Queen.

So while some of you may have seen my earlier posts about the Claw Foot Tub

Or the Upcoming Photos of The Drywall

I realize that others are patiently waiting for updates here!

Let’s catch up!

When I purchased The Queen, I never imagined what it would be like Getting the clawfoot tub into this sweet old Victorian.

I didn’t even imagine ever having to do this.

There are simply some things one does not think about when they are buying a home.

In my case A VERY OLD HOME!

That needed copious amounts of work!

And was in a very bad state of disrepair!

And that is putting it mildly!

This sometimes leaves me scratching my head.

Wondering if I had a temporary moment of insanity

Or perhaps I had just gotten caught up in the romance of ‘Anne of Green Gables”

This seems more likely!

Prince Edward Island – Anne Of Green gables

But I love The Queen!

And in all seriousness

We needed to get the brand new cast iron tub that had been sitting in my front yard…

In a huge box…

For almost 3 months…

Up Those Narrow Stairs!

So…how does one get a 300 pound clawfoot tub upstairs?

On a tiny, narrow staircase?

Why of course…with a massive Blue Genie!

You also need to have an excellent crew

Not just anyone can operate such a massive machine!

It took 4 strong men to move the tub

They were a very caring crew that wrapped the tub up and secured it to the forks of the Big Blue Genie

Then MAGIC happened!

On a very foggy, chilly morning, The Queen kindly obliged and let us haul an incredibly beautiful, heavy tub up through the gaping hole where her antique windows should be.

There were A LOT of wires to maneuver around

One false move could be dangerous to the workers.

It was a bit unsettling to watch.

I held my breath

In this crazy video you can see the machine operator expertly avoiding the wires and safely getting the tub up to the window opening.

The tub had to be carefully turned once it reached the window so it could fit through the opening.

Great job, they made this look so easy!

SUCCESS!

My Beautiful Tub from Signature Hardware is finally upstairs.

We had to wrap her in large bubble wrap

And strap her to a heavy duty furniture dolly

So she can be moved around during construction

We weren’t quite ready for her, but this was the only chance to get the tub upstairs before the windows get reinstalled!

For those wondering, I had mentioned on Instagram that in order for this tub to be upstairs we had to beef up the ceiling joists below.

The dining room happens to be the room below

You can also see that we added a shallow false wall around the bay window.

This is to hide the plumbing. I want to keep the integrity of the room

without a UGLY chase or soffit hiding the plumbing

I had to kick and scream and fight for this to happen.

I WON!

Here is another shot showing how the plumbing was hidden in the walls of the bay window and ceiling.

The ceiling was very slightly dropped to accommodate the new plumbing.

My Post about What To Expect When Opening Up An Old House is a MUST READ!

You can’t believe the things one can uncover! All I can say is that it is amazing that the antique claw-foot tub in the original upstairs bathroom didn’t come crashing through the ceiling!

Go check it out!

Now on to the drywall.

You get a sneak peak of it from the photo above!

Insulation at Victorian By The Bay, check it out!

As always your continued support means the world to me.
